Red Men and White Wister Owen 9781318966035 Books Reviews
"Red Men and White" is a group of very entertaining "western frontier" short stories. "Indian wars, lynch mobs, desert crossings, mining camps, and stagecoach robberies -- all are brought vividly to life ..." (from the introduction). If you think (as I at first did) because the stories were published in 1895 the writing may be "old fashioned", they are not. The stories have a remarkably contemporary feel to them, and I enjoyed all of them. Now I want to get Wister's "The Virginian".
I loved the Virginian and really liked Len McLean but Owen Wister did not do nearly as well on this book. I did not like the yay he wrote this.
These stories of the "wild west" are fascinating portrayals of the real west. I grew up near where some of these stories happened. It gave me a greater appreciation for the tough and determined folks from previous generations.
Dated but still entertaining look at the Western experience before Hollywood and TV changed it.
